I Heart GO

January 28, 2018 by admin

A theme we embrace at the Bloomington Church of Christ is “I Heart GO!”

Come worship with the Bloomington Church of Christ in Bloomington/Normal

What this stands for is “I Love God & Others.” Pretty simple, right?

We are actively seeking to strengthen our church culture with some simple tools to equip our members to do three things:

  1. Love God
  2. Love Others
  3. Share the Good News

During Sunday services as well as in our small groups that meet weekly, we will be sharing stories with one another about how we’ve been putting each of those three things into practice.

We hope you’ll join us as we seek to put the Bible into practice. See you soon!

A Christian Church Serving Bloomington Normal IL

December 29, 2016 by admin

Christian Church Worship

One of the fundamental needs of every person is to be a part of a community. According to Psychologist Abraham Maslow, creator of the famed “hierarchy of needs,” the need for love and belonging come right after our very basic needs for safety and physiological wellbeing. God himself knows this, which is why he established the Christian church.

Church is not just a building. According 1 Corinthians 12, the church functions a lot like a body:

Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. (1 Corinthians 12:15–19, NIV)

In other words, every part of the body is important!

The Christian Church Has a Place for Everyone

The Bloomington Church of Christ is a Christian church serving Bloomington-Normal IL that is a safe place for everyone to come, learn and draw closer to God. Never been to church? There’s a place for you. Been hurt by a church? There’s a place for you. Not sure what you’re even looking for? There’s a place for you, too.

Our goals as a community are to love God, love others, and equip and encourage one another to do so. No matter what your background, we want to meet you where you are at in your personal journey of faith and help you discover just what your role in the church body is.

We hope you’ll join our community at a Sunday service, take time to learn more about us, or contact us if you’re not quite ready to go to church, but would like to learn more about the Bible. We conduct personal Bible studies around your schedule. Hope to see you soon!

Practical Teaching & Real-Life Help

Church Classes

Looking for a Church in Bloomington/Normal? Here You Can Get Practical Teaching and Real-Life Help

Does the thought of learning from God’s Word excite you? Or are you wondering how a book written thousands of years ago is even true or relevant? Whether you’re looking for a church or just trying to get some real-life help, we believe that the Bible is relevant to the modern world and provides practical teaching that you can apply to every aspect of your life.

While we know we don’t have all the answers to life’s tough questions, we start by digging into the Bible, which is “living and active” according to Hebrews 4:12, and applying it to our lives.

In Sunday sermons, we explore a variety of topics from the Old and New Testament and discuss how to make them relevant. Our speakers are encouraged to be engaging, but rooted in scriptural truth. Check out our sermons for some examples of what to expect.

Outside of Sundays you’ll find additional guidance. Topics like dating, marriage, finances, parenting, career, education and more are complex issues that most of us need help with. We encourage our members to get connected with the resources that are relevant for their needs. From midweek small group classes to special seminars and small one-on-one or small group Bible studies, you’ll have the opportunity to dig into the Bible and discover what it really says about your life. Please see the calendar for the most up-to-date information about upcoming classes and other learning opportunities.

Contact us if you have any questions or needs; we’d be happy to get you connected! Sometimes life’s most powerful lessons come simply through conversation with people you can trust. If you’re looking for a church in the Bloomington/Normal area or a community of people who will be your best coaches, teachers and cheerleaders, we hope you come check us out.

Bible Studies & Resources

December 28, 2016 by admin

Bible studies

Do you want to learn more about the Bible, but don’t know where to start? You’d be surprised how many people identify as a Christian, yet don’t know a whole lot about what the Bible says. For this reason we encourage everyone who attends our church to participate in small group or one-on-one Bible studies.

Maybe you’ve grown up in church, or maybe you have never owned a Bible in your life. Either way, there is always more to learn. Consider the story of the Ethiopian eunuch from Acts 8:26–39:

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, ‘“Go to that chariot and stay near it.”

Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

“How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:

“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

We love this story because it shows a man deeply devoted to knowing God, yet the man knew that he needed help. He humbly accepted guidance from Philip, and as a result was able to know God in a more intimate way than he could have ever imagined.

In the same way, we hope you take the opportunity to dig into a Bible study that will help you know God more intimately. We use an introductory Good News study, which will be available for download soon, but we highly recommend that you work through it with a “Philip” in your life. Please contact us to set up a personal Bible study today! Our members are trained to help you explore the Scriptures personally, so you can find the relevant teachings based on your needs and experiences.

If you’d like to continue exploring on your own, please visit our sermons and lessons page for the latest updates.
